If you remember this past fall I made an adorable sheet cake you can check out here!

Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays because I love my country and anything patriotic has a special place in my heart ♥️

I made a Video tutorial of this 4th of July cake for my YouTube channel, you can watch here…

Although I usually make my cakes from scratch, I decided to go with a box cake because I LOVE this kind and wanted to make my life easier 🙂

I love making these types of cakes because you cant mess them up! They always come out looking amazing and you can use any color scheme for any time of year or for any occasion.

To make this 4th Of July cake you will need :

  • A box of vanilla cake mix including what the instructions call for OR your favorite vanilla cake recipe (This is my favorite recipe from Lindsay at Life, Love and Sugar Vanilla Cake Recipe)
  • Rectangular cake pan
  • Half a batch of my American Buttercream Recipe OR a tub of store bought frosting
  • Food colors Red and Blue
  • Piping bags with various piping tips (you can buy plastic piping tips at the grocery store if you do not have any)

Steps To Make Sheet Cake

  1. Prepare box cake mix according to the instructions (or if you are making cake from scratch follow recipe)
  2. Divide batter into 3 equal parts and color one red, one blue, and leave the other white
  3. Add batter by the spoonful into a rectangle cake pan making sure to disperse colors throughout and use a toothpick to marble the colors together
  4. Bake until done
  5. While your cake is baking prepare some buttercream frosting. I used a half batch of my American buttercream (you can find the recipe here)
  6. Divide frosting into 3 bowls and color one red, one blue, and leave the other white. (If you want your frosting to be very white be sure to check out my buttercream recipe post where I teach you how to achieve this)
  7. Use your favorite piping tips and fill some piping bags with your red, white, and blue frosting. I used piping tips 1M for red, 6B for blue, 3 for the white, and 2D for the tri-colored swirl.
  8. Once the cake is cooled it’s time to decorate! If your cake has a hump in the middle you can level it with a knife
  9. Decorate the entire top of the cake with swirls and drop stars. Be creative and go for it! You really can’t mess up using this decorating technique
